New day new challenge.

Day 3 of the MetalSmith Challenge: 🛠️

 

Today is the third day of the earring challenge and we combining Ocean Jasper with Lemon Quartz. At least trying.

 

During the period when I was pursuing my metalsmith certification, I learned the skill of diamond setting by soldering a jump ring with metal.

This technique helps to elevate the surface which provides enough space for the crystal to sit securely.

Since I didn’t have the proper tools, I ended up creating a hole in the metal by luck until the lemon quartz fit well. At least, that’s what I believed.

It’s a bit like baking a cake – you have to be really precise with all the ingredients, especially the measurements. Even a tiny 1 mm measurement mistake can cause the crystal to pop up.

 

And that’s precisely what happened in my case.

– I accidentally chipped the jump ring with a hammer.

– Then I scratched the crystal and replaced it with a new one.

– I ended up breaking the replacement crystal as well.

After numerous hours of fine-tuning and dealing with anxiety, I ultimately managed to successfully place the quartz into the setting.

But during the polishing process, one of the lemon quartz popped up.

That was my breaking point. I removed the second quartz, which was nicely in place and left earrings with big holes.

 

You can probably tell and see that it turned into a complete disaster. Lesson learned – Never start a project without having enough tools on hand.

However, in the end, I managed to rescue the design. I placed a small silver bead where the crystal should have been. It looks nice, even though it didn’t go as planned.

The energy of the Ocean Jasper is quite different from what you’d expect from an ocean. It feels grounding and protective.
